Funchal's farmer's market

Funchal's farmer's market (Mercado dos Lavradores) in the old town is the point of attraction for all tourists in Madeira. Firstly, here you can see, taste, touch the exotic fruits for which the island is famous. Bananas, guava, papaya, pitanga, grenadilla, tamarillo, mango, silver bananas and even apples and lemons are not so simple here! In addition to fruits, flowers, seeds and spices are on the market.

A visit to the fish rows leaves a special impression. Shellfish, tuna, espada, mackerel, perch - freshly caught ocean gifts look very colorful on the shelves. The market is a tourist destination, and the prices are appropriate here.

Secondly, the building of Mercado dos Lavradores itself is considered the architectural symbol of Estado Novo (New State), and was built in the style of "rational modern". This is a historical place - the first time the market opened its doors in 1940.
The fruit rows are wheelchair accessible via the main entrance. The second floor can be reached by lift. The fish market is easier to get to via Rua da Boa Viagem.
