Square stone bell tower of Funchal Cathedral

Funchal Cathedral (Sé do Funchal) – The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, is located in the heart of the old city. The building of the cathedral in the Gothic style was built in the 15th century from thousands of blocks of volcanic rocks transferred from Cabo Girao.

The facades are plastered and painted white, the corners are stone. Inside, the cathedral is adorned with a magnificent 16th century altarpiece, a carved cedar ceiling and a massive silver cross for religious processions presented to the cathedral by King Manuel I of Portugal. In memory of the visit of John Paul II to Madeira in 1991, a statue of the pope was placed next to the cathedral.

Please note that there is an accessible entrance for visitors in wheelchairs through the left or side door of the church.
